Today a goodly group of parishioners and priests from St. Anselm’s got their hands dirty planting new hedges to replace the felled Laylandii. With over 300 individual plants it was a full days work for all the willing volunteers.

Fr. Jack arrived to help with the labour. Having only just become  a Catholic it was good to ensure he realised that this existence is centred on hard work.

Meanwhile Mike Blande merely posed, attempting to look as if he was labouring, whilst actually looking, for all the world, as if he is suffering from a bad case of wind.

The work led to clear joy for Tom, pictured here brandishing one of the Blackthorn we are planting. The choice of hedging has much to do with Fr. Leveseur who plans to produce parish Gin from the berries.

Bernie arrived for the afternoon, replacing William, and was soon using the plants to pretend to be an Ent. Clearly he is a fan of Lord of the Rings, even if the impression leaves much to be desired.

Lunchtime heralded some much needed sustenance in the form of fish and chips. Pembury has an excellent ‘chippy’ that is benefitting at present from our days of manual labour.

As the sun went down there was nothing left for workers to do, except retire to the Black Horse for a pint or two. A great day comes to an end in which many hands combined to move our vision forward. A vote of thanks to all those who gave their time today.
